The Current State of DEI Efforts

In the wake of the 2024 Olympics, many leaders are looking to reset their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. This is due in part to the growing recognition that traditional DEI approaches have fallen short in creating truly diverse and inclusive workplaces and societies. Some are even going as far as to suggest replacing DEI with a new approach called "MEI" (Merit, Equity, and Inclusion).

The Man in the Arena

In his famous "Man in the Arena" speech, President Theodore Roosevelt spoke about the importance of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity. He said, "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."

The Power of Proof of Concept (POC)

In the context of DEI, a proof of concept (POC) is a series of activities intended to demonstrate the potential benefits of a new or innovative approach. POCs can be used to test the feasibility, effectiveness, and impact of a new DEI initiative before it is implemented on a larger scale. By carefully planning and executing a POC, leaders can gain valuable insights into the potential benefits and challenges of a new DEI approach before committing to a full-scale implementation.

Conclusion

The current state of DEI efforts is in a state of flux. Traditional approaches have fallen short in creating truly diverse and inclusive workplaces and societies, and new approaches are being explored. It is important for leaders to be open to new ideas and to be willing to experiment with different approaches to DEI. By doing so, we can create a more just and equitable world for all.
