Middle Tennessee Football Fires Derek Mason
After 7 Years, 53-41 Record, and Five Bowl Games
MTSU Blue Raiders Football Fires Head Coach Derek Mason
In a move that shocked the college football world, Middle Tennessee State University has fired head football coach Derek Mason after seven seasons.
Mason, 53, had a 53-41 record at MTSU, including five bowl appearances. However, the Blue Raiders finished 3-9 in 2022, their worst record since 2013.
MTSU Athletic Director Chris Massaro said in a statement that the decision to fire Mason was made after a "thorough evaluation" of the program.
"We appreciate Coach Mason's contributions to Middle Tennessee State University and wish him all the best in his future endeavors," Massaro said.
Mason is the second FBS head coach to be fired this season, following Scott Frost at Nebraska.
Possible Reasons for the Firing
- MTSU's 3-9 record in 2022, their worst since 2013
- The Blue Raiders' struggles on offense, averaging just 17.9 points per game in 2022
- Mason's inability to consistently win big games, going 1-5 against FBS opponents in 2022
Potential Replacements
Several potential candidates could replace Mason as MTSU's head coach, including:
- Tony Elliott, offensive coordinator at Clemson
- Marion Hobby, defensive coordinator at Memphis
- Tom Herman, former head coach at Texas
MTSU is expected to begin its search for a new head coach immediately.
